It’s time for another instalment of my cool type-pairing series, this one featuring only personal blogs. (Yes, I know it’s been many months since I posted the last one. Sorry!)
Tara McMullin: What Works
Tara McMullin’s ‘What Works’ website has a lovely elegant-retro feel to it, and most of that feeling comes from its typography. What Works uses League Spartan (The League of Moveable Type) for body text and Behind the Nineties (Casloop Studios) for headings.
League Spartan is available on Google Fonts but Behind the Nineties you have to purchase a web licence for (though it is free for personal use).
John Jago
John Jago’s website uses a colour scheme that is similar to Tara’s, but his website is extremely minimalist. He uses Source Sans 3 (Paul D Hunt) for everything except the site title, for which he uses Pacifico (Vernon Adams and others). Oh, and when it needs to show code, this website uses your browser’s default monospace typeface.
Both Source Sans 3 and Pacifico are available on Google Fonts.
I was in two minds about sharing this website here – given John hasn’t posted anything to it since 2025 – but it made the cut because I wanted to show how much you can achieve with just a single typeface :)
Tim Brown
Tim Brown is Head of Typography at Adobe, so you would expect his website to be pretty cool – which is very much is. He uses Fern (David Jonathan Ross) for body text, Mallory (Frere-Jones Type) for headings, and Source Code Variable (Adobe) for monospace text.
Richard Rutter: Clagnut
Finally, there’s Clagnut: the website of Richard Rutter. Richard is a designer so his website is pretty excellent too. He uses Literata (TypeTogether) for almost everything except incidental text, for which he uses IBM Plex Sans (Mike Abbink, Bold Monday).
I love Literata so, typography-wise, this is one of my favourite personal blogs – probably equal to Rands in Repose, which I mentioned earlier on in this series.
What’s next?
I’ll stick with personal websites for my next post too. There are several really cool ones out there!
