Earthquake Relief Information: Rozan Programmes

Psychosocial Intervention Programme for Earthquake Survivors

The thousands of children who have survived the earthquake are severly traumatized and must be dealt with accordingly. Before attempting to "treat" them, please get trained by professional psychologists who specialize in trauma.

Rozan -- an NGO working on issues of emotional health, gender and violence against women and children -- is running two and will be starting five programmes to deal with the mental and emotional effects of the earthquake. These programmes are as follows:

  1. Psychosocial First Aid: training volunteers for providing immediate support to children in hospitals. The trainings are five hours long and will be repeated three times a week for a month. Volunteers need to attend only one training. Trainings are conducted every Wednesday (9:00 AM - 2:00 PM) and every Friday (11:30 AM to 4:30 PM). Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. This programme is no longer active.
  2. Psychosocial Rehabilitation: training relief workers to work with traumatized children in the long-term.
  3. Psyhcological Debriefing: debriefing to support staff and relief workers working in disaster areas; its aims are to prevent burn-out and reduce stress.
  4. Awareness Raising: a written and electronic media campaign to raise awareness on trauma and its effects on children.
  5. Individual Counseling: counseling for distressed by the earthquake (direct victims or people affected indirectly).
